3-weeks China travel itinerary suggestions for first-time visitors

Hey everyone! I'm planning my first trip to China and I'm super excited! I was wondering if anyone could suggest a 3-week itinerary for first-time visitors. I want to experience the best of what China has to offer, from the bustling city life to the serene countryside. Any recommendations or tips from those who have been there? 😄🌸

-Day 1: Forbidden city and Tiananmen square -Day 2: The great wall and possibly the summer palace -Day 3: day trip from Beijing (possible contenders are Chengde, Old dragons head, the hanging temple and Cangyan shan) -Day 4: day trip from Beijing (same options as the day before) -Day 5: Universal studios Beijing -Day 6: morning train to Xi’an, biking Xi’an’s town wall, evening at the muslim neighborhood -Day 7: day trip to Hua shan -Day 8: day trip to the Maijishan grottoes, evening train to Chengdu -Day 9: Leshan buddha and surroundings -Day 10: Another day trip from Chengdu (possible contenders are Qincheng shan and Zigong for its dinosaur museum and tea houses. Emei shan also got our attention but one day just to see the summit would feel way too rushed.) -Day 11: train to Zhangjiajie (via Chongqing) -Day 12: Zhangjiajie -Day 13: to Fenghuang ancient town -Day 14: Fenghuang ancient town -Day 15: from Zhangjiajie to Guilin -Day 16: Li river “cruise” from Guilin to Yangshuo, bike rental in Yangshuo -Day 17+18: biking around Yangshuo -Day 19: train from Guilin to Changsha+ train from Changsha to Beijing -Day 20: Free day in Beijing -Day 21: flight back home

We also have three possible alternatives: -(1)Skipping Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang ancient town, giving us more time to appreciate the Karst landscapes around Yangshuo (or the other way around: skipping Guilin and Yangshuo giving us more time in Hunan): if, considering the rest of our itinerary, you should skip one of the two, which would it be and why?

-(2)Exploring the western part of Sichuan instead of Guilin/Yangshuo and Zhangjiajiew Western sichuan also seems nice for an introductory trip to China(to get a, albeit small, taste of Tibet) and our itinerary there would be the following: bus from Chengdu to Kangding, exploring Kanding and spending the night there, the next day the bus to Tagong, where we would spend the next 3-4 nights and return to Chengdu

-(3)Going to Yunnan instead of Guilin/Yangshuo and Zhangjiajie.

We are fully aware that, if we follow this jampacked itinerary, we would spend a considerable amount of time in public transport (in our case: high speed trains) and we’re fine with that. Our “day trips” would start with waking up between 5 and 6am and not arriving back at our hotel between 7-10pm.

It would be best if you visited China in spring, between April and May, or in autumn, between September and October.

Counting your days, your 3 week (21 day) itinerary is currently 23 days. Is the number of days for your trip flexible? If the days shown for the individual locations were full days and travel time was in addition, then it would be a good itinerary, but I suspect travel is included in the number of days shown, so no the itinerary is too much for the number of days.

This is especially true when you include the Yunnan part of your trip. For the number of Yunnan places you plan to visit, traveling between 4 locations, 8 days total would be really rushed. Maybe reconsider visiting Hong Kong and cutting Shanghai to just 2 full days -both big cities with little of the cultural interest found in your other locations and use these as travel days.

2 full days in Xi'an is enough for most but there is plenty to do if you were there for 3 full days. Pingyao ancient town is of course a place to be considered as it's on the high speed rail line between Beijing and Xi'an, if you can fit it into your available time. It can be done with just an overnight stop.

Yes, if you really want to fly to Hong Kong from Yunnan, you'll need to back track from Shangri-la, past Lijiang and Dali, to Kunming. If you pass on a visit to HK, you could fly direct from Lijiang to Shanghai. Also, Will you have a double or multiple entry visa since with your plan you will enter mainland China two times? If only a single entry visa and you want to visit Hong Kong, go there first or last in your itinerary so you only enter mainland China one time.
