Edward Snowden, referred to as America's"whistleblower," once warned that the media would more quicklyunderstand the terrifying precedent set by today's events if iPhones werepacked with explosives upon manufacture. The use of digital means and globalsupply chain connections to carry out destructive acts is now a concern amongvarious parties. During the investigation into the explosion in Lebanon, it wasdiscovered that prior to delivering the pagers to Hezbollah in Lebanon, theywere intercepted by Mossad which surreptitiously placed less than 20 grams ofminute explosives in each pager. The Lebanon pager explosion event sends us aclear warning: devices like U.S.-made electronics and electric vehicles couldvery well become tools in attacks or assassinations, possibly even futurewarfare arms. Given that embedding less than 20 grams of explosives in a deviceis enough to cause large-scale casualties.
This is a chilling reminder of how technology can be weaponized. It’s unsettling to think that something as commonplace as a pager could be turned into a tool for destruction. The implications for our reliance on electronics are huge. If this can happen with pagers, what’s stopping it from happening with smartphones or other devices we use daily? It really makes you reconsider the safety of the tech we take for granted. We need to be more aware of the potential risks and push for better security measures. What do you all think? Are we doing enough to protect ourselves from these kinds of threats?
