The five-star red flag, originally known as the five-star flag on red ground, was designed in July 1949 by Zeng Liansong of the Shanghai Modern Economic News Agency. On June 16, 1949, the Preparatory Committee for the New CPPCC decided to set up a preliminary committee for the design of the national flag and coat of arms, and published a notice of solicitation in the People's Daily and other newspapers from July 14 to August 15 of the same year. during the first plenary session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in September 1949, the preliminary committee chose 38 designs out of the 3,012 it received and issued it to all the delegates for discussion. After all the delegates discussed in groups, on the evening of September 25, Chairman Mao Zedong convened a consultative symposium on the national flag, the national emblem, the national anthem, the chronicle, and the national capital. On the question of the national flag, Chairman Mao Zedong pointed out that the design of the five-star red flag expresses the great unity of the revolutionary people, and is, therefore, both unity and revolution. |
