community 的中文释义为 “社区；社会团体；共同体；[生态] 群落”。

例如：

a local community（当地社区）
the scientific community（科学界）
a community of interests（利益共同体）
plant community（植物群落）。

不要把community理解为“小区”

很多人会将community理解为“社区”或者“小区”，但是这一理解并不完全正确。“社区”或者“小区”偏重于地域概念，但是community强调的是“群体”。如果要指国内的“小区”，我们可以说residential compounds。
	
《朗文词典》对于community的一个定义是：the people who live in the same area, town etc. 即单词可以理解为“群体，团体”。举个例子，The local community was shocked by the murders. 这一句子应该理解为“当地社区居民对这些谋杀案感到震惊”。
	
对于中文里面经常出现的“XX界”，我们也可以用community来表示，比如“商业界”可以说the business community，“学术界”可以说the academic community。
	
除了表示“群体”之外，community还有一些其他用法，比如the community意思相当于society and the people in it，即我们所说的“社会”。要表达“让某人回归社会”，我们可以说reintegrate somebody into the community。比如：The trend is towards reintegrating mentally ill people into the community. 目前的趋势是将精神病人重新融入社会当中。
